Participants will learn the critical components of federal grants, engage in case study exercises, and explore new federal grant opportunities, including funding related to affordable/special needs housing, homeless services, behavioral health, youth prevention, community and economic development, and criminal justice. Where the Rubber Hits the Road: Combining Non-Profit Planning with Strategic Funding Development

In the non-profit world, strategic planning often faces a critical challenge: how to fund mission-driven program priorities and initiatives. Funding is where the rubber meets the road, and the absence of a strategic approach to fund-raising can leave strategic plans sitting on the shelf. In this unique workshop, non-profit CEOs, COOs, and Development Officers are invited to explore a comprehensive catalogue of funding options, including government and private grants, loans, individual donations, planned gifts, tax credits, vouchers, fee-for-service, and social entrepreneurship income, and how these sources can be customized strategically to fit their organization's financial portfolio and accomplish their goals. Registration is limited to the first 25 people to register and pay their fee.

About the Presenter:
Michael Kannensohn is a trainer for Grant Services of Lexington. He founded and serves as the chief funding strategist for Strategic Funding Group (SFG), a grant and funding consulting firm with offices in Lexington, KY and Atlanta, GA. Over the past 30 years, as he grew his initially small company to one representing non-profits from coast to coast and winning them millions in funding, he gained vast experience in research, policy analysis, persuasive technical writing, grants training, and strategic funding plan development. Invaluable in the growth of SFG were Mike’s prior experiences in high-level research, consultation, and executive management for organizations such as the Mayor’s Training Center, Council of State Governments, and the Kentucky Department of Corrections. Throughout his career, Mike has been a member of a number of professional associations including the National Society of Fund Raising Executives. He also has served on many and varied non-profit boards and, most recently, has joined the High Street YMCA Board of Directors. He earned his B.A. in Political Science/Public Administration from the University of South Florida and his M.A. in Political Science/Public Administration from the University of Kentucky. Currently, he is a Donovan Scholar at UK’s Patterson School of Diplomacy studying International Affairs. Mike turned SFG over to his daughter, Leah Tennille, in 2012 and has been delighted to see its business revenues over the past five years while building a substantial roster of new clients, including the largest county government in Georgia.
